Athens picks up area win over Muscle Shoals

An early offensive onslaught allowed Athens to overcome a 2-0 deficit and take a commanding 9-2 victory over Muscle Shoals in a Class 6A, Area 16 softball contest Tuesday evening. With the victory, Athens secured the runner-up spot in the area.

Muscle Shoals opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning, but Athens responded in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own. The Golden Eagles then took control of the game with five runs in the second inning.

Olivia Patton and Gracie Green had RBI doubles in the inning while Emma Ogden had a run-scoring single. Two other runs scored on Muscle Shoals errors. The Trojans committed six errors in the game, leading to six unearned Athens runs.

The Golden Eagles capped the scoring with two runs in the fifth, with one run scoring on a wild pitch and the other scoring on a Green double.

Green, Patton and Mary Greg Anderson all had two hits for Athens. Maddie Wilson was the winning pitcher, working the final 6 2/3 innings of the game in relief and allowing no runs and only three hits while striking out six batters.

Elkmont 2-5, Lauderdale County 9-0

Elkmont split a Tuesday doubleheader with Lauderdale County, falling 9-2 in the first game before winning the nightcap 5-0.

Haven Kirby had a home run and a double for Elkmont in the first game, while Malena Butler also had two hits and an RBI for the Red Devils. Six errors hurt Elkmont, as none of Lauderdale County’s nine runs were earned.

Elkmont came back strong in the second game, as Sara Davis pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing just two hits and striking out six batters. Tylee Thomas led Elkmont with two hits and two RBIs, while Gabby Rhineheimer also had two hits and drove in a run. Paige Robinson also had a hit and an RBI for the Red Devils.

Lawrence County 12, East Limestone 3

East Limestone banged out 10 hits, but couldn’t overcome six errors in a loss to Lawrence County Tuesday.

Savannah Tyler led East Limestone with three hits, while Mallory Jo Mitchell and Kaci Sharp each had two hits and an RBI. Maddison Watkins also had two hits, including a double, for the Indians.

Boys Soccer

West Limestone 3, Clements 3

West Limestone and Clements battled to a 3-3 tie Tuesday, with all six goals coming in the first half.

The Wildcats got on the board first when Rudy Teletor Reyes scored directly from a corner kick. But Clements answered back immediately with a goal by Omar Chavarria.

Jose Ramon scored back to back goals for West to give them a 3-1 lead midway through the half, but Clements once again responded with goals by Cody DaCruz and Chavarria in the last few minutes before halftime.

Neither team could score in the second half, although West Limestone had two shots carom off the crossbar.

Tanner 11, New Hope 1

David Pizano scored seven goals as Tanner blasted New Hope in an area game last Friday. Pizano set the Tanner career scoring record with 122 goals, and has 48 goals this season alone.

Frankie Vicente added a goal and an assist, while Manuel Felipe had a goal and three assists. Gonzalo Rubio and Alexander Blanco also had goals for Tanner, while Tyler Keenum, Luis Carcia and Carlos Martinez tallied assists.

Girls Soccer

West Limestone 4, Clements 2

Katherine Medrano scored two goals in the last 10 minutes to give West Limestone a victory over Clements Tuesday night.

The Wildcats had taken a 2-0 halftime lead on first-half goals by Cassidy Winter and Stephanie Marcial, but Clements tied the score early in the second half with two goals by Leslie Gonzalez. But Medrano broke the tie with nine minutes remaining and then added an insurance goal with three minutes to go to seal the victory.
