East Limestone gets win in Gulf Coast Classic

East Limestone closed out its participation in the Gulf Coast Classic with a come-from-behind 8-7 win over Batesville Tuesday night.

The Indians had taken a 5-0 lead with five runs in the top of the second inning, but Batesville came back to tie the score with five runs in the bottom of the fourth, and then took a 7-6 lead with two runs in the sixth.

Michael Kassay had the game-winning hit, driving in the go-ahead run with a single in the top of the seventh inning. Kassay had also given the Indians a short-lived lead in the top of the sixth with an RBI double.

Payton Jackson struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh inning to preserve the win. Jackson pitched the final two innings without allowing a run to get the win. It was a fitting end to the game for Jackson, who also had a three-run double as part of East’s five-run second inning.

Cameron Johnson had three hits, including a double, for the Indians, while Tyler Wagnon and Carlton Schmeider had RBIs.

Robertsdale 19, East Limestone 5

East Limestone fell behind early and couldn’t do anything with Robertsdale in a Gulf Coast Classic game played Tuesday afternoon.

Robertsdale scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and was never challenged by the Indians, who didn’t help their cause by committing seven errors in the game.

Johnson led East with three hits, including a double, while Kassay had two hits, with one of them being a double. Wagnon and Nathaniel Greene also had RBIs for the Indians.

West Limestone 6, Lawrence County 4

West Limestone scored three runs in the second and fourth innings to take down Lawrence County in a home game Tuesday evening.

West had only four hits in the game, but took advantage of five Lawrence County errors. The Wildcats didn’t commit any errors in the field.

Alec Baugher had two RBIs for West Limestone, while Bayle Owens had two hits and an RBI. Dalton Baugher and Braden Tuten also had RBIs for the Wildcats.

Garrett Tennison was the winning pitcher, allowing six hits and four earned runs in 5 1/3 innings pitched. Tuten pitched the final 1 2/3 innings without allowing a hit or a run to pick up the save.

Clements 5, Falkville 2

Clements took an early lead and held on for the win in a rescheduled game Wednesday morning.

The Colts took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an error and RBI single by Austin Hall, and then put the game away in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run home run by Seth Harbin.

Cole Wales had three hits for the Colts, while Hall had two hits and an RBI. Ryland Kirk and Eli Gilbert also had RBIs for Clements in the win.

Harbin was the winning pitcher, allowing just two runs on six hits in six innings of work. Isaac Evans worked a scoreless seventh inning to get the save.

Clements 11, Falkville 9

Clements overcame a late deficit by scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and held on for a win over Falkville in the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.

Clements enjoyed a 7-2 lead after scoring five runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth, but Falkville took the lead with five runs in the top of the fifth.

Clements came back with five runs in the sixth, with the big hits in the innings being two-run singles by Lucas Bailey and Kyle Shutes.

Bailey had two hits and three RBIs in the game, while Austin Hall had three hits and two runs batted in. Shutes and Cole Wales also had two hits for the Colts.

Isaac Evans pitched the final two innings of the game to pick up the win.
