Athens softball takes win in tournament

Athens took a big 9-1 victory over Marion High School in the Gulf Coast Softball Classic after dropping their first two games of the tournament.

The Golden Eagles pounded out 14 hits in the game and scored six runs in the first two innings to take early control.

Gracie Green and Emma Ogden led Athens with three hits each, including a double, and Green also added an RBI. Anna Carder had two hits and two RBIs, while Olivia Patton had two hits while driving in a run.

Mary Greg Anderson, Olivia McCurry and Victoria Wilson also had RBIs for the Golden Eagles in the victory. Maddie Wilson was the winning pitcher, allowing just five hits and one run in five innings of work.

Athens suffered a tough loss to Central Monday morning in the tournament opener Monday. Central jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings, but Athens cut into the lead with four runs in the top of the third.

However, the Golden Eagles couldn’t score in the fourth, and the game ended after four innings due to the tournament time limit.

Anna Carder had a double and two RBIs for Athens, while McCurry had the other RBI.

Stanhope Elmore 6, Athens 5

Athens suffered another one-run loss Monday afternoon, as once again they nearly clawed their way back from a large deficit.

Stanhope Elmore led 6-1 after three innings, but Athens scored four runs in the top of the fifth to make it a one-run game, thanks to an RBI single by Carder and a three-run home run by Green. But once again, the comeback fell short as the game ended after five innings due to the time limit.

McCurry had two hits for Athens, while Green had three RBIs and Carder had two RBIs.

Baseball

West Limestone 8, West Morgan 4

West Limestone overcame an early deficit with a balanced scoring attack and earned a home victory over West Morgan Tuesday afternoon.

Alec Baugher led the way with three hits and two RBIs, while Levi McCormick also had three hits and a run batted in. Jesse Rose had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs as well. Dalton Baugher had an RBI triple while Gage McKelvey and Daltin Simmons also had RBIs for the Wildcats and Braden Tuten had two hits.

McKelvey was the winning pitcher, allowing three hits and one run in five innings.
