The NCAA might have moved the 3-point line back more than a foot, but that didn’t bother Middle Tennessee State’s Giddy Potts, who nailed six 3-pointers to lead the Blue Raiders to a 91-64 win over Vermont in the first round of the NIT Tuesday night.
Athens native Potts was the game’s leading scorer with 25 points. With the win, he became the winningest player in Middle Tennessee State men’s basketball history.
The NCAA is experimenting with some new rules for this season’s NIT, with the two biggest rule changes being the teams playing four 10-minute quarters instead of two 20-minute halves, and the 3-point line moved back 1 foot 8 inches to make it 22 feet 1.75 inches away from the basket, the same distance used by FIBA for international competitions.
Potts, already one of the top 3-point shooters in MTSU history, didn’t seem to mind the change, as he made 6-of-11 attempts from behind the new line, as Middle Tennessee pulled away for the victory.
The Blue Raiders led by eight at halftime, but outscored Vermont 32-9 in the third quarter to turn the game into a blowout.
Middle Tennessee State will play at Louisville in the second round of the NIT. The Cardinals defeated Northern Kentucky 66-58 in its first-round game.
