The Elkmont Red Devils went undefeated in pool play and won the Varsity Gold Division of a truncated Calhoun Community College Field of Dreams Tournament at Decatur’s Wilson Morgan Park.
Elkmont won all three of its games in pool play without allowing a run. The Red Devils defeated Muscle Shoals 3-0, Geraldine 4-0 and Central-Florence 4-0.
The tournament began Friday afternoon and continued all day Saturday. The winners of each pool were supposed to meet in a single elimination portion of the tournament, but Saturday evening rain forced the tournament to be halted, with division winners being selected from pool play results, with teams with the best record and fewest runs allowed being named champions.
Since Elkmont was undefeated and allowed no runs, the Red Devils were crowned Gold Division champions.
Elkmont scored all three of its runs in the third inning of the tournament’s first game, which was all pitcher Autumn Davis needed.
Abby Gooch hit an RBI double and Hannah Ussery followed with a two-run single to stake Davis to the three-run lead, which she made stand up. Davis only allowed three hits and struck out seven batters in picking up the victory. Brilee Miller also had two hits for the Red Devils.
Davis was once again dominant in the circle in the Red Devils’ 4-0 win over Geraldine, allowing just two hits.
Gooch led off the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning, and Elkmont added two more runs in the second on a ground ball by Haven Kirby. Kirby also drove in the final run in the fourth inning with a single, and finished the game with three RBIs. Davis also finished the game with two hits.
Elkmont finished off pool play by pitching a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over Central-Florence. Ussery and Sara Davis combined for the no-no.
Elkmont scored three runs in the first inning, with Miller driving in two with a single and Ussery hitting a double to drive in the other run. Elkmont added another run in the second, with Kayla Smith hitting an RBI single. Smith had three hits in the contest.
Athens 7, Clements 1
Gracie Green had two hits and two RBIs to lead Athens past Clements on Friday in pool play. Olivia McCurry also had a hit and three RBIs for the Eagles in the victory.
Mary Greg Anderson was the winning pitcher, and also had a hit and an RBI.
Madelyn Atkins had two hits for Clements while Tessa McElyea had a hit and an RBI.
