Lester polling place may change

Voters in the town of Lester may be few, but they may be the most dedicated in Limestone County.
Unfortunately, the town’s polling place — the community storm shelter — isn’t the most accommodating. With 169 registered voters, it’s the smallest precinct in the county.

“It’s underground, and moisture is an issue,” Probate Judge Charles Woodroof said Wednesday at a work session of the Limestone County Commission.
To that end, Woodroof is asking the commission to consider changing Lester’s polling place and splitting voters. If approved, 104 would vote at the Good Springs Senior Center, while 65 would cast ballots at the West Limestone Volunteer Fire Department.
The change would require Lester residents to travel farther from home on election days. From Lester town hall, it would be 8.2 miles to the Good Springs precinct and 6.2 miles to West Limestone.
For the change to take effect in time for the June 5 primary, the commission would need to approve the request at Monday’s meeting. The deadline to change a precinct is three months prior to an election, Woodroof said, so Monday’s meeting would be exactly three months before the primary.
If approved, notification would be posted in Lester and the Board of Registrars would mail change-of-polling-place notifications to the 169 affected voters.
The commission meets 10 a.m. Monday at the Clinton Street Annex.
