Athens man charged with sex abuse of 6-year-old girl

An Athens man accused of inappropriately touching a 6-year-old girl has been charged with sexual abuse, an official said.

Athens Police Sgt. Bret Constable arrested Santiago De La Cruz Ramos, 31, of 305 N. Malone St., on a charge of sexual abuse of a child under age 12, Police Chief Floyd Johnson said today.

Ramos is accused of inappropriately touching the girl, who is not related to him, either the night of Feb. 10 or in the early morning hours of Feb. 11 in the 300 block of North Malone Street.

Johnson said there is no indication there are other victims.

Ramos was booked at the Police Department and transferred to the Limestone County Jail.

Bail has not yet been set on the felony charge.

Ramos has no prior convictions for sexual abuse, according to the national sex offender registry.

The crime of sexual abuse of a child under 12 is a Class B felony with enhancement in Alabama. It is punishable upon conviction by 10 to 20 years in state prison.
