Athens falls to McAdory in subregional

The Athens girls basketball team has been known for tough defense this season. But the Golden Eagles had no answer for McAdory and their standout player Jamya Tyus on Monday night.

Tyus scored 28 points and the Yellow Jackets defeated Athens 77-57 in the northwest subregional to advance to the northwest regional tournament in Hanceville.

McAdory scored 20 points in each of the first two quarters and led 40-26 at halftime. Alexis Woods tried to bring Athens back in the third quarter, scoring 13 of her team-high 21 points in that quarter, but McAdory continued the offensive attack and never allowed Athens to close the gap.

Jakayla Bridgeforth scored 13 points for Athens, while Stacia Benford added eight to supplement Woods’ 21. Kalyn Quicksey scored 17 for McAdory, while Jaylin Austin tallied 15 for the Yellow Jackets.

Athens finishes its season with a 20-11 record.

Class 3A Northwest Girls Subregional

Carbon Hill 65, Clements 58

Clements had an early lead, but the third quarter proved to be the difference in a northwest subregional game.

The Colts led 13-8 after one quarter and was in a 29-29 tie at halftime. But Carbon Hill outscored Clements 16-6 in the third quarter to take a 10-point lead the Colts could not recover from.

Emrey McGill led Clements with 17 points, while Abby Craig scored 15 and Anslee Gordon chipped in with six.

Carbon Hill’s Molly Kate Atkins led all scorers with 25 points.

Clements ends its season with a 13-17 record.

Class 2A Northwest Girls Subregional

Cold Springs 53, Tanner 48

Tanner suffered a close loss to Cold Springs in a subregional game on Monday night. The Rattlers finished their season with a 13-14 record.

Boys Soccer

Tanner 10, Clements 0

David Pizano scored five goals to lead Tanner to a big win over Clements in the Rattlers’ season-opener on Monday night.

Tanner led 6-0 at halftime before scoring the final four goals in the second half. Sergio Mendoza added one goal and two assists, while Tyler Keenum, Carlos Martinez, Richard Rosas and Gonzalo Rubio also scored goals for the Rattlers.

Defenders Christian Nolasco and Frankie Vicente, as well as goalkeeper Baruk Rios, locked down the shutout for Tanner. The Rattlers next play Thursday at Hartselle.
