An Athens man accused of possessing images and video files of a person under 17 involved in obscene acts has been charged with five counts of possession of child pornography, and additional charges are pending, records show.

Joseph Scott Bennefield, 32, of 2414 U.S. 31 South, remained in the Limestone County Jail Monday on the charges, with bail set at $25,000.

Bennefield was arrested after an investigator searched his room Jan. 31 at the Town & Country Motel on U.S. 31 in Athens.

Special Agent Senior Kathy Stewart of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency made the case and the arrest.
