Savannah Tyler scored 12 points, including five in overtime, as East Limestone outlasted a tenacious Tanner team 47-44 to win the Limestone County Girls Tournament championship.
The Indians led 41-32 with 5:08 remaining in the fourth quarter, but Tanner scored the final nine points of the quarter, including a basket by Jayla Walton with 1:15 remaining that tied the score.
Tyler had a chance to win the game in regulation for the Indians, but her baseline jumper at the buzzer was just short. However, the senior made up for it by hitting a 3-pointer 30 seconds into the extra period, which gave the Indians a lead they would not relinquish.
A Kennedy Lewter free throw with 1:33 left cut East’s lead to 45-44, and the Rattlers had a chance to take the lead just over a minute later, but Lewter’s layup attempt was blocked by Reagan Embry.
Tyler was then fouled with 14 seconds left and calmly swished both free throws to make it a three-point game. Tanner had one final chance to tie the game, but a last-second 3-point attempt was off the mark.
Jirah Rogers led East Limestone with 18 points while Hailie Smith scored 15. Tanner was led by Lewter and Nahri’yah Timmons with 10 points each while Ikia Mitchell and Walton both added nine.
Limestone County Boys Tournament
Tanner 43, West Limestone 32
Tanner outscored West Limestone 21-6 in the fourth quarter to turn a deficit into a comfortable win in the final of the boys tournament.
The Rattlers scored just four points in the third quarter and trailed the Wildcats 26-22 entering the final frame. But Tanner began the quarter with back-to-back baskets by Zakobe Shoulders, followed by consecutive steaks and layups, the first by Nathan Montgomery and the second by Malik Atkins. Atkins was fouled while making his layup and converted the free throw to put the Rattlers up 31-26 less than 90 seconds into the quarter. An offensive rebound and putback by C.J. Yarbrough on Tanner’s next possession capped an 11-0 run to open the quarter and was all the Rattlers needed to cruise to victory.
Tanner’s defense was superb the entire game, holding the normally good-shooting Wildcats to just 3-19 shooting from behind the 3-point line.
Atkins scored 10 points to lead Tanner while Yarbrough, Shoulders and Macarius Jones all scored seven.
West Limestone was led by Drew Beddingfield with 11 points and Alex Casteel with eight.
