Clements girls clinch second place in area with win

Clements had a huge night from Abby Craig as the Colts took a 57-47 area win over East Lawrence in a makeup game Monday night. The game was originally scheduled to be played on Jan. 12, but was rescheduled due to the winter storm that blew through the region that day.
The victory clinched second place in Class 3A, Area 15 for the Colts. Clements will play third-seeded Elkmont in the semifinal round of the area tournament, which will be hosted by West Morgan. The winner of that game will clinch a spot in the subregional round of the playoffs.

The game didn’t start off well for Clements, as the Colts trailed 11-6 after one quarter and 21-20 at halftime. However, behind the play of Craig and Emrey McGill, Clements fought back in the second half.
The Colts took a 37-35 lead into the fourth quarter and outscored East Lawrence 20-12 in the final frame to pull away for the win.
McGill led Clements (10-12 overall, 3-3 area) in scoring with 20 points, while Craig scored 18 points and pulled down 15 rebounds to give the Colts a huge edge in the paint.
East Lawrence (3-14 overall, 1-5 area) was led by Anna Kate Segars with 24 points.
East Lawrence boys 60, Clements 48
Clements may have already clinched the top spot in Class 3A, Area 15, but the Colts will be entering the area tournament on a two-game area losing streak after suffering a 12-point loss to East Lawrence on Monday.

The game was tied at 24 at halftime, but East Lawrence outscored Clements 20-8 in the third quarter to take a commanding lead and cruised to victory in the fourth period.
Austin Harvell scored 19 points to lead the Colts, while Lucas Bailey added nine. East Lawrence was led by KJ Welch, who scored 21 points, including 13 in the second half.
Clements fell to 10-11 overall and 4-2 in area play. The Colts will host the area tournament as the top seed and will play fourth-seeded East Lawrence in the semifinal round with a spot in the subregional playoff round on the line.
Athens boys 74, Hartselle 69, OT
Athens picked up its second consecutive overtime win as the Golden Eagles recovered from squandering a nine-point halftime lead to defeat Hartselle on Monday night.
The Eagles led 21-7 after one quarter and had a 38-29 halftime advantage. Hartselle came out strong in the third quarter and cut Athens’ lead to 49-47 after three. The game was close throughout the fourth quarter, but Hartselle was able to tie the game at 64 to send it to overtime.
The duo of Tyler Williams and Marquez Bone combined to score nine of Athens’ 10 points in the overtime period as the Eagles pulled away for the win.
Williams led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 20 points, while Bone scored 15. Isaiah Gilbert and Chandler Leopard each finished the game with 13 points for Athens.
Hartselle girls 49, Athens 46
Athens made a spirited fourth-quarter comeback, but it wasn’t enough as the Golden Eagles fell to Hartselle on Monday night.
Athens led 13-11 after one quarter, but Hartselle outscored the Golden Eagles 21-6 in the second quarter to take a 32-19 halftime lead.
Athens (15-9) trailed 44-31 entering the fourth quarter and made a furious comeback, outscoring the Tigers 15-5 in the final frame but falling three points short of overtime.
Alexis Woods led Athens with 18 points, while Olivia Patton scored 15 for the Eagles. Hartselle was led by Moriah Taylor with 16 points.
