Calhoun MLK celebration rescheduled for Tuesday

Calhoun Community College will pay tribute to slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Tuesday, according to a press release.

The school’s annual celebration is set for 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Aerospace Training Center on the school’s Decatur campus. The free event is sponsored by Calhoun’s Black Student Alliance.

The event was originally scheduled for Jan. 16, but was rescheduled because of the threat of winter weather.

The featured speaker for this year’s program is the Rev. Dr. Julius R. Scruggs, pastor of First Baptist Missionary Church in Huntsville.

A native of Elkton, Tennessee, Scruggs was raised in Toney. He is a graduate of Council Training High School in Huntsville.

After earning a bachelor’s degree at American Baptist College in Nashville, he earned master’s and doctorate degrees at Vanderbilt University School of Divinity in Nashville. Scruggs also received the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Alabama A& M University.

He is married to the former Josephine Stewart Tipton. They are the proud parents of Jennifer Juliette Scruggs (daughter) and Morris Errol Tipton II (son). They have three grandchildren — Morris E. Tipton III, Morgan Taylor Tipton and Elizabeth Francina Scruggs.
