A motorist struck a Limestone County school bus carrying three students about 9:30 a.m. today, though no one was injured, an official said.

Rusty Bates, transportation director for Limestone County Schools, said the accident happened at the intersection of Persimmon Tree and Bailey roads but was not weather-related.

Classes in Limestone County were canceled Tuesday through Thursday due to ice and frigid temperatures, but classes resumed two hours late today. Bates said the bus carrying students from West Limestone and Sugar Creek schools was turning off Persimmon Tree and onto Bailey when the car struck it.

“It didn’t damage the bus, and I don’t think the students really knew what had happened,” Bates said. “I’m not sure whose fault they will call it.”

Bates said he had driven about 250 miles of road since 5 a.m. to see what shape roads were in, especially in some areas of western Limestone County where trees line both side of the road and prevent sunlight from melting ice.

“The roads were looking a lot better this morning,” Bates said. ”The County Commission has done a great job of getting salt on the roads, and that has helped us tremendously.”

He said county road crews spread salt until 8 or 8:30 p.m. Thursday and again this morning.
