Demigods of Limestone County take heed — a festival in your honor will take place at the Athens-Limestone Public Library at 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22.

Make plans to join other Percy Jackson fans at the library’s “Welcome to Camp Half-Blood” event, where quests will abound and blue food will be served.

Rick Riordan’s book series, “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” puts a modern twist on Greek mythology, reimagining the ancient gods for the 21st century. Named for the god Perseus by his human mother, Sally, it turns out the troubled teen’s father is Poseidon. The books chronicle the quests and adventures of Jackson and other demigods he meets along the way.

Every winter at about this time, the library’s youth service puts on a big event, hoping to get local kids excited about reading. Head of Youth Services Amanda Coleman said they had great success with their Harry Potter-themed events, selling out of tickets two years in a row.

“We changed up the theme this year because a lot of teenagers asked me to spice it up a little bit and try something different,” she said. “A lot of our teens love the Percy Jackson series, and it is required reading in both the county and city schools.”

“I thought celebrating the stories in the book would make reading more exciting for our kids,” she added. “Anything that encourages reading. Those are the things we love to do.”

Attendees are encouraged to dress up as their favorite Percy Jackson characters. The event is open to all ages. Children under 13, however, must be accompanied by an adult.

In addition to blue food, a nod to Jackson’s favorite color, the party will include Greek-inspired games and crafts.
