Shopping for the perfect gift for family and friends can be stressful, but it does not have to be for those who give the gift of art.
High Cotton Arts in downtown Athens is a nonprofit art incubator operated by Athens Arts League that houses studio and exhibit space for about 15 artists. The artists create locally made pieces such as paintings, pottery, jewelry, photographs, mixed media and more.
“There is nothing more enjoyable than shopping in local businesses, because small business owners always take pride in creating a one-of-a-kind shopping experience,” said High Cotton Arts artist Sanda Bishop. “I always consider what the buyer would like to have in his or her home or buy for a loved one for a gift. As an artist, I share pieces that I love and want to bring joy to my buyers. A shopping mall cannot reproduce that.”
Bishop has created several Christmas-themed pieces, including Santa Claus paintings. Those who are looking for stocking stuffers can visit the booth of artist Wanda Fortner, who has created small canvases of snowmen in various themes. Other stocking stuffer ideas are the necklaces and key chains artist Tanjie Nash Schrimsher creates, including pieces with a cardinal in the winter and a bald eagle flying.
“We have art pieces that range in prices to fit any budget,” said Athens Arts League Board Vice President Diane Lehr. “When you give the gift of art, you let the recipient know you put thought into purchasing an item that fits his or her personality — an item that evokes an emotion, because art speaks to each of us.”
Photographer Randall Lewter, who operates a studio at High Cotton Arts, offers a service for those who have discolored or damaged photographs. He can restore the pictures and remove the scratches or other damages. Family history buffs and history lovers in general can bring Lewter their old and damaged pictures for restoration as a gift to a loved one or a gift to themselves.
For those who need a break from shopping, some of the artists offer classes and paint parties, including those with a holiday theme. Classes are for various ages and include mediums such as watercolors, acrylic painting, door hangers, pottery and stained glass. Follow High Cotton Arts on Facebook to stay updated on holiday events and classes.
High Cotton Arts is located at 103 W. Washington St. in the former Estes building. It is open to the general public from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. High Cotton Arts will have some extended hours for holiday events during December.
