FRC to take on CASA’s mission

The Family Resource Center is adding one more item to its list of services after agreeing to take on the mission of another nonprofit group that announced its dissolution earlier this year.

Tina Cook, director of the FRC, said she was approached by Limestone County’s Care Assurance System for the Aging (and Homebound) about continuing the service of ramp-building for disabled persons in the community. CASA officials announced in April the nonprofit would dissolve.

Cook didn’t know much about CASA or its mission, but it did make referrals to the organization if clients sought help for a disabled family member. She explained officials with the organization, like longtime board member Helen Carter, have provided a guidebook on how to continue advancing CASA’s original mission. CASA also transferred some of its remaining funds to the FRC, which will help cover the cost of new employee Anita McCarty. McCarty will work 10 hours per week, on Mondays and Fridays, and she will conduct home assessments when a ramp has been requested.

FRC also received CASA’s volunteer list, which Cook said will be crucial to continuing the cause. She said volunteers, most of which are affiliated with local churches, have already expressed excitement about building more ramps and helping more residents.

Cook is excited to begin offering the service to the community beginning Dec. 4. Those interested in applying for a ramp are asked to call McCarty at 256-230-0880.

“CASA has been around for a long time, and even though they felt like they needed to dissolve the organization, they didn’t want to leave the community with a gap,” she said. “It’s an honor for us to continue that great service.”

Carter believes the FRC will do “an outstanding job” of continuing CASA’s mission and she looks forward to working with McCarty and helping her get her feet on the ground.

“The board didn’t want to (dissolve), but we had gotten to the point where we couldn’t keep a director,” she said. “(The FRC) is going to be able to take this and go with it. It will be a good fit for them, too, and something they can be proud of.”

She enjoyed her time with CASA and loved when a ramp recipient would call her and ask her to stop by and see their new ramp.

“That’s when you know you’ve made a difference,” she said.
