Women’s Resource Center moves to bigger space

An Athens-based nonprofit organization now has room to continue growing after a recent move to a new location.

The Women’s Resource Center moved earlier this month from a building behind Kreme Delite on S. Madison Street to a medical office building at 727 W. Market St., Suite D. The organization provides free ultrasounds to pregnant women in hopes that once they see their fetus, they will carry the baby to term as opposed to terminating the pregnancy.

The Women’s Resource Center also provides counseling and parenting classes to mothers and items like diapers, formula and baby clothes. Those items are provided by donations and from a network of about 20 churches that partner with the organization.

Amy Wright, director of the center, said the new space is double the size of the former office. She said because it had been used for medical offices, it was set up perfectly to accommodate ultrasound equipment and counseling rooms. It also had more space to store donated items.

She said the organization signed an occupancy agreement with the building’s owners. The plan is to eventually purchase the building.

“It really solved several of our needs and allows for more parking. People can be more anonymous coming in,” Wright said. “It also had handicapped-accessible bathrooms.”

Wright said the primary need for space was to serve a growing clientele. Most of the center’s clients hear about the organization through partner churches, Internet advertising and from individuals.

Church partnerships are important to the center’s mission, but so are community donations. The center gladly accepts financial contributions and donations of new diapers, formula and baby items.

The Women’s Resource Center hosts one annual fundraiser each year. The next event is set for Aug. 25 at the Limestone County Event Center. Those interested in attending can now purchase tickets and reserve tables. Those who wish to donate or purchase tickets to the event are asked to call the center at 256-233-5775.

“Everything just really seems to be falling into place,” Wright said. “I’m just really amazed at how God got us from the old building to the current one. I think it will be a good thing for our clients and for the Athens community.”
