An 8-year-old boy who reportedly suffered severe facial trauma in a T-bone wreck last week on U.S. 72 in Athens was released Sunday from Children’s Hospital in Birmingham, an official said.

The accident occurred about 5:15 p.m. Nov. 9 in front of Chick-fil-A.

The boy, Daniel Cochran, was a passenger in a 2004 Pontiac driven by Tame la Michelle Cochran, who was also injured and required medical attention, Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said Monday.

The boy was sitting in a back seat wearing both a lap and shoulder belt when the accident occurred, Johnson said. The vehicle’s front airbag deployed, he said.

According to radio dispatches, Athens Fire & Rescue personnel had to extricate the boy from the wreckage.
