- West Limestone's Josh Odom tries to dive over the top for a touchdown, but is stopped by Ardmore's Chase Lay (32) and A.J. Jones (52) before crossing the goal line.
Ardmore outscored West Limestone 20-0 in the second half to pull away and end its season with an impressive 34-14 victory.
The Tigers might not be going to the playoffs, but you would never know it from the packed stadium and celebration after the final horn sounded.
Noah Barnett threw for 162 yards and two touchdowns while Chase Lay scored three rushing touchdowns as Ardmore completely shut down West Limestone in the second half.
The first half was evenly matched between the two teams, as they traded touchdowns before going into the halftime break tied at 14.
Ardmore struck first on its opening possession, as a 41-yard pass from Barnett to Joe Neal Douthit and 23-yard completion to Anthony Taylor set up Lay’s first touchdown, a 1-yard plunge to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead.
But West came right back, as quarterback Graham Pepper scored on a 1-yard run of his own and then ran in the 2-point conversion to give the Wildcats an 8-7 lead late in the first quarter.
Following an Ardmore punt, West Limestone extended its lead to 14-7 as Josh Odom scored on a 7-yard run early in the second quarter.
But from that point on, it was all Ardmore, as the Tigers scored the final 27 points of the game.
Ardmore tied the score with 1:38 remaining in the half, as Barnett hit Jason Hogan on a comeback route that looked to gain about 10 yards. However, Hogan broke a tackle and sprinted down the sideline for a 64-yard touchdown.
The second half was more of the same, as the same two players hooked up to give the Tigers the lead. This time, the pass was a little shorter, as Barnett found Hogan streaking down the sideline and hit him in stride for a 24-yard scoring pass midway through the third.
Ardmore added two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, both on runs by Lay. The first was an 8-yard run midway through the final quarter while the second came on an 11-yard run on Ardmore’s next offensive play after an interception by Garrett Duskin.
Duskin’s interception was a fitting conclusion to the defensive performance Ardmore put on in the second half. The Tigers held West Limestone to just 41 yards in the second half, and never let the Wildcats get past midfield.
Ardmore finished its season with a 3-7 record in Class 5A while West Limestone finished its regular season with a 4-6 record in Class 4A. The Wildcats will continue play next week in the first round of the 4A playoffs, when they travel to take on No. 4-ranked Fayette County.
