- Clements running back Crimson Bivens bulls his way down the field as Elkmont's Ben Hobbs (3) tries to make the tackle. Bivens rushed for 160 yards and the game's only touchdown.
Clements used its running game and defense to get a 7-0 victory over Elkmont on Friday in a Class 3A, Region 8 matchup.
The Colts only attempted one pass in the game, but used its rushing attack to keep the ball away from the Red Devils and made one big defensive stop late in the game to keep Elkmont out of the end zone.
While Clements had 64 rushing attempts for 274 yards, its only score came on a 3-yard run by Crimson Bivens late in the second quarter. Two other offensive drives inside Elkmont’s 15-yard line were stopped on downs.
However, while Clements wasn’t able to finish off drives with points, the Colts used tons of clock and barely let Elkmont’s offense take the field. The Red Devils ran just 29 offensive plays compared to Clements’ 65.
Elkmont had one final chance late in the game, as a 46-yard completion from Davis Hobbs to Hunter Pitman and a 23-yard completion to Ben Besherse gave the Red Devils the ball at Clements’ 19-yard line with less than 2 minutes remaining.
However, Hobbs threw four straight incomplete passes into the end zone to end the threat, and Clements was able to run out the clock for the victory.
It was the Colts’ second consecutive shutout, as Clements defeated East Lawrence 17-0 last week.
Bivens led Clements with 160 yards rushing on 32 carries while Kaleb Fletcher had 109 yards on 23 carries. Hobbs completed 10-of-17 passes for 95 yards for Elkmont in the losing effort.
Clements (4-5, 2-5) will travel to take on St. John Paul II next Friday while Elkmont (1-9, 1-6) has completed its season.
