An Athens man was arrested Thursday on drug charges after he attempted to flee officers serving a search warrant, an official said.

Athens Police Capt. Trevor Harris said narcotics officers were attempting to execute the warrant at a home in the 800 block of Westmoreland Avenue. As officers approached, they saw 37-year-old Derrick Cornillous Shoulders of 326 N. Hine St., Athens, standing in front of the residence.

“He fled into the house and slammed the front door, but officers were able to quickly apprehend him,” Harris said, adding Shoulders had several prescription pills in his pocket.

Once the residence was secured, officers searched the area where Shoulders was detained. Harris said two firearms, crack cocaine, marijuana and an assortment of prescription drugs were found.

Shoulders was arrested on charges of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, second-degree possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. After being booked at the Athens Police Department, he was placed in the Limestone County Jail.
