- A crew works Wednesday at the site of a convenience store under construction in the 24000 block of U.S. 72.
Anyone traveling on U.S. 72 west of Mooresville Road may have noticed a new convenience store coming up out of the ground.
Developer Bill Ming this week confirmed he had sold a 20-acre tract to a Decatur development group, which is building the store at 24999 U.S. 72. He said the group has previously developed stores in the area under the “Cowboys” brand, but he had no information on what the new store would be named.
“It will be a full-service convenience store, which will have eight pumps and also offer diesel gasoline,” Ming said.
He explained the developers like the location because it’s on the “coming home” side for those who live in Athens and Limestone County but work in Madison or Huntsville.
The tract is not currently within the city limits of Athens. If the proprietors have intentions of selling wine or beer to those heading home after work, it will have to be annexed into the city limits.
Ming said the development group also purchased an adjacent plot for the purpose of future development.
Ming said he was financing the construction of an access road from U.S. 72 that will open up an additional 17 acres to the north, which he plans to develop at a later date. He said there were no immediate plans on what would be built there.
