Athens volleyball plays Hoover tournament

The Athens High School volleyball team participated in the Hoover Over the Mountain Tournament at Hoover High School on Saturday, falling in four matches.

The Golden Eagles took on Daphne in their first match, which was a 2-0 loss (7-25, 14-25). Brooke Berzett had three kills, 19 digs and one block to lead Athens. Emma Ogden also had eight digs for the Golden Eagles.

Athens’ second match was against Ramsay, which resulted in another 2-0 loss (16-25, 11-25). Berzett had six kills and 16 digs for the Eagles, while Mary-Greg Anderson had 15 digs and Gracie Green had nine digs and eight assists. Gentry Wolfe and Ogden combined for 20 digs. Wolfe also had two kills.

The Eagles’ third game was against Montgomery Academy. Athens fell 2-0 (16-25, 11-25) with Anderson having 17 digs to lead the defense. Berzett had six kills and 18 digs, while Elizabeth Elmore had 11 digs and Alli Williams had six digs, two blocks and one kill.

Athens closed the tournament by playing Bob Jones, falling 2-0. Athens overcame a tough first set loss (1-25) to nearly defeat the Patriots in the second set before falling 22-25.

Berzett had seven kills, 12 digs and one ace, while Elmore also had 12 digs to go along with one kill. Green had seven digs and seven assists, while Wolfe had 11 digs and Anderson, Ogden and Mikayla White combined for 20 digs.
