A Huntsville woman was arrested Wednesday on a charge of chemical endangerment of a child after the premature baby she delivered at Athens-Limestone Hospital died a short time later, an official said.

Athens Police Capt. Trevor Harris said 29-year-old Ashley Reynolds of 2458 Mobile Drive told hospital staff she had “consumed several different controlled substances in the past three days.” The Limestone County District Attorney’s Office notified Athens Police about the incident.

Athens detectives interviewed hospital staff and documented evidence before the child’s body was transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Huntsville for an autopsy. After spending the night at the hospital Tuesday, Reynolds was discharged Wednesday morning. She was then interviewed at the Athens Police Department.

Harris said as a result of the investigation, Reynolds was charged with chemical endangerment of a child. Because it is believed the chemical endangerment contributed to the death of the child, it was elevated to a Class A felony.

After being booked at the police department, Reynolds was taken to the Limestone County Jail. No bond had been set as of Wednesday evening.
