The Athena League decided to add a yearly 5K race to their list of fundraising efforts three years ago. The League has been raising money for programs that help local women and children since 1972.

This year’s proceeds will go to the Pink Elephant Fund and Women’s Health Fund at the Athens Limestone Hospital Foundation in honor of breast cancer survivor and League member, Britney Carter.

The fund provides mammogram scholarships, improved equipment for detecting women’s health issues and equipment that is less invasive.

Recent statistics show one in eight U.S. women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in their lifetime.

“By giving to the Pink Elephant Fund and Women’s Health Fund, we believe we can help lower that statistic by finding better methods of detection and care,” McNutt said.

Last year Athena League member Britney Carter was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma, the most common form of breast cancer.

“She fought it and is now cancer-free,” McNutt said.“We are rejoicing over Britney’s recovery and using this year’s funds to help more women in our community like her.”

Racers can register online at appleannie5k.itsyourrace.com or between 7-7:50 a.m. on the day of the race. The race will start at 8:00 a.m., and the 1-mile fun run will immediately follow at 9 a.m.

This year’s route has changed slightly. Runners will start on Market Street and end on Marion Street by the Regions Bank.

The top three males and females in each age group will receive awards. Local businesses have donated gift cards for the prize drawing.

There will also be a prize for the most spirited runner, so Halloween costumes are encouraged.

Near the finish line, a “family fun zone” will be set up in the Regions Bank parking lot. Families can enjoy food from local vendors, face painting, games and inflatables.

McNutt expects about 200 participants to turn out for the race.
