Kid’s Safety Day
Lowe’s will host a free kid’s safety day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at the Athens location. Kids will get the chance to interact with emergency vehicles, win prizes and learn safety tips. Guests include Athens Fire & Rescue, Limestone County Sheriff’s Department, state troopers and storm chaser Jason Simpson.

Scarecrow Contest
Isom’s Orchard is now accepting entries for the Scarecrow Contest. All school clubs and teams are eligible for entry, as well as elementary school groups. Entrants must deliver their entry form by Tuesday, Sept. 26. Scarecrows and accompanying sign with entrant information must be decorated and delivered for display by Sunday, Oct. 1. Voting will be open to the public Oct. 2-22, with winners announced Saturday, Oct. 28. One ticket equals one vote. Tickets may be purchased at Isom’s Orchard. Prizes include $300 for first place, $200 for second place and $100 for third.
SNAP signup
Retired Senior Volunteer Program is taking applications for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for those ages 60 and older. North Pole Stroll
Athens-Limestone County Tourism is accepting sponsorships for the North Pole Stroll now through Tuesday, Oct. 31. The North Pole Stroll is a display of 7-foot, live cut Christmas trees located in Big Spring Memorial Park in Athens, each decorated by a sponsor. Sponsorships are $100 each. Quacky Duck Decorating Contest
Community may now vote for a duck to be awarded “Best Decorated — People’s Choice” by donating $1 to that duck’s jar. Ducks are on display at participating businesses and organizations. Stability classes
East Limestone Senior Center will host SilverSneakers stability class from 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. every Thursday at 25820 Nick Davis Road. SilverSneakers is a group exercise class designed to keep participants safe on their feet. The class will include standing and walking exercises designed to decrease the risk of falling.
