HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama man has been charged with the fatal shootings of two women who lived near each other in the city of Huntsville, stealing prescription drugs from the home of the first victim and a car from the second.

Police said in a Tuesday morning news release that Otis Preston Mayes, 27, of Boaz, was charged with two counts of capital murder.

Authorities were called to a mobile home park Monday night and found a 77-year-old woman who had been shot in the head. She died later at a hospital. Police said prescription drugs had been stolen from her mobile home.

That shooting was under investigation when police were notified of a one-car accident. The driver of the crashed car was seen running from the scene and was reportedly armed. Officers investigating the accident went to a house not far from the mobile home park and found the body of a 59-year-old woman who had been shot.

Police said Mayes had been staying with a family member not far from the first victim’s house, and that he and the first victim were acquaintances. He is believed to have gone to the woman’s house Monday night, and to have shot her and stolen her medications, police said.

Police say Mayes did not know the second victim when he knocked on her door. They allege that he shot her, stole her car and crashed it. He was found and arrested a short time later.

“The case is still under investigation, but investigators say Mayes committed the crimes by himself,” the police news release said.

Mayes was being held without bond Tuesday morning at the Madison County jail. Online records did not indicate whether he has an attorney who could comment.
