Athens splits games to open volleyball season

Athens High opened its 2017 volleyball season at Hartselle Tuesday, participating in a tri-match against Columbia and Hartselle.

The Golden Eagles split the two games, defeating Columbia 2-0 before falling to the host Tigers 2-0.

Athens took a convincing win over Columbia, winning the sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-10. Alli Williams and Brooke Berzett led the way with five kills each, while Gentry Wolfe had six aces.

Berzett also led the team in digs, with eight, while Gracie Green had seven digs and 14 assists. Emma Ogden had six digs and five aces for the Eagles.

Athens had a tougher time against Hartselle, falling in two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-21. Ogden had 15 digs for Athens, while Haley Hargrove and Mary-Greg Anderson both had nine digs. Green had 12 assists, while Berzett had five kills.

In other volleyball action from Tuesday, Lindsay Lane Christian Academy defeated St. Bernard Prep in straight sets. The Lions won the sets by scores of 25-13, 25-19 and 25-18.

Both Athens and Lindsay Lane will be participating in the Limestone County Invitational Tournament Saturday at Athens High.
