As the heartbreaking news reports out of southeast Texas continue to pour in, Alabamians and Limestone Countians are doing their part to send financial and moral support to those affected by Tropical Storm Harvey.

On Tuesday, Gov. Kay Ivey urged Alabamians to pray for Texans as Harvey slowly made its way toward Alabama. She sent condolences to the families of those who have lost loved ones, including the family of Steve Perez, the Houston police sergeant who drowned after being trapped by high water in his patrol car.

“Today, we are reminded that despite our differences, despite our political ideologies, despite what may separate us, each of us are Americans, united by our common heritage and our commitment to liberty as given to every man, woman and child by Almighty God Himself,” Ivey said in a statement. “Though we never wish for a catastrophic event such as this, it certainly gives us perspective and reminds us of what is important in life.”

Ivey also urged Alabamians to consider helping Texans by supporting the American Red Cross and other agencies who are providing resources.

Limestone County Schools

Children enrolled at Limestone County schools are also helping those affected by Harvey by simply wearing a hat and making a donation to the Red Cross. A statement sent to parents said Superintendent Dr. Tom Sisk and staff agreed it would be a great way for students to help others in their time of need.

“We have received help from far away when disaster has struck close to home and now it’s our turn to help,” the statement said.

The statement also explained a $2.50 donation would provide a child with a comfort kit, including hygiene items and a stuffed animal. A $5 donation would provide a blanket to a child, while $10 would provide a hot meal and snacks to a child.

“Please consider making a donation to the Red Cross and wearing a hat on Friday to show your support for families in need right now in Texas,” the statement said. “Thank you in advance for helping families in need.”

Pizza for products

On Friday, Joe’s World Famous Pizzeria will partner with Cub Scout Pack 282 in Ardmore to collect items for storm victims. Those who contribute at least $5 worth of canned goods, bottled water, diapers, baby formula and/or baby wipes will receive a free 8-inch cheese pizza. Those who contribute $10 in supplies will receive any 8-inch pizza, free of charge.

The Cub Scouts will arrive at 4 p.m. to begin collecting items.

Hotels collecting

Lastly, an official with the Madison-based Omega Hotel Group announced during the month of September, it would contribute $1 for each room rented to aid storm victims. The group will also place donation boxes at each hotel for those who want to contribute items.

Area locations include the Holiday Inn Express, Fairfield Inn and Suites and Best Western hotels in Athens and the Holiday Inn Express and Suites on Madison Boulevard in Madison.

“All of us at Omega Hotel Group are deeply saddened and concerned about the loss of life and devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey to those in Texas,” said Lisa Horn, regional director for the Omega Hotel Group. “We hope this donation … will help ease the suffering of those affected, and we encourage our employees and clients around the world to join our efforts to contribute on behalf of those in need.”
