An Athens woman already facing theft-related charges in Athens and Decatur was charged Friday with first-degree financial exploitation of an elderly person.
Lori Pendergrass Sconyers, 43, of 1503 Buchanan St., was located by the Athens Police Department and taken to the Decatur Police Department to meet with detectives, according to a press release. After being charged, she was taken to the Morgan County Jail. Cash bond was set at $10,000.
On June 12, a Decatur resident had filed a report with Decatur police relating to the theft of her 91-year-old mother’s Discover credit card, according to a police spokesman. The theft occurred at the mother’s southeast Decatur home, he said.
In late June, an Athens police investigator arrested Sconyers on two counts of fraudulent use of a credit/debit card, after he determined she had used the card of the elderly person to buy nearly $617 in merchandise from Athens Walmart on June 10 and 11.
Decatur Police Detective Michael Ferguson, who was assigned the stolen credit card case, obtained an arrest warrant for Sconyers on July 10. She was arrested July 13 on third-degree theft charges.
On July 14, Ferguson was made aware of multiple additional charges made to the victim’s bank account. Sconyers was developed as the primary suspect for the additional charges, the release said.
