Australian minister to speak in Athens

Anyone who looks at Paul Furlong’s monthly itinerary would notice something peculiar.

In May, the Australian evangelist visited Liberia and Ghana, which was followed in June by a visit to Pakistan. He plans to visit India in October, but he’s scheduled to visit the United States this week. Specifically, Furlong will be in Athens, Alabama.

Considered by some as the “Billy Graham of Australia,” Furlong will bring his message to camp meetings at Full Gospel Tabernacle Church Friday through Monday. The church is at 17470 Seven Mile Post Road, Athens.

Kenneth Vincent, the pastor at Full Gospel Tabernacle, said the opportunity to host Furlong was made possible because they have similar ministries.

“I have a healing ministry, and he does too,” Vincent said of Furlong. “I broadcast weekly on (Athens radio station) WKAC and it’s over the internet and he got in touch with me. He asked if I wanted him to come to Athens and I said, ‘Come on.’”

Vincent said Furlong visiting Athens is an honor because the last time he visited the United States, he held an event in New York City. He expects there to be “standing room only” at Full Gospel Tabernacle, which seats about 200.

“If we have to, we’ll set up a tent outside and put up a monitor,” Vincent said.

In addition to being a faith healer, Furlong is also a recording artist and Christian songwriter.

“He’s not influenced by American pastors, so he’ll have a fresh approach to the gospel from ministering all over the world,” Vincent said. “He believes in the demonstration of the power and not just preaching. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime event and it will be an interesting thing to experience.”
