An Athens man who gave his borrowed van to another man, which wound up at a scrapyard, has been arrested on multiple charges in Limestone County.

Lonnie Wayne Davis, 34, of 16609 Blackburn Road, was charged Wednesday on two counts of possession of a controlled substance (one a probation violation), first-degree theft, using false identity to avoid arrest or to hinder prosecution and making a false report to law enforcement, according to Deputy Stephen Young, public information officer for the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office.

Davis remained in the Limestone County Jail Thursday afternoon, with bail set at $12,500.

Davis’ journey started June 13, when Limestone County Sheriff’s Investigator Lt. Jay Stinnett obtained arrest warrants for Davis charging him with first-degree theft and false reporting.

“Stinnett obtained the warrants after learning Davis reported the theft of a 2003 Chevrolet Astro van that he didn’t own,” Young said. “Another man had loaned the van to Davis who then gave it to someone else, and it was sold to Tennessee Valley Recycling.”

Young said giving the borrowed van to someone else resulted in the theft charge and reporting the theft of a van he didn’t own resulted in the charge for making a false report.

While on patrol Wednesday, Deputy Terry Johnson stopped a white Chevrolet Silverado on Bell Road at Blackburn Trailer Park.

Johnson approached the passenger side, where Davis was sitting, and asked both occupants for identification. The driver handed over his license. Davis said he didn’t have his but could supply his name, John Davis, and his Social Security number. He denied he was Lonnie Davis.

Since Lonnie Davis had fled before, Deputy Tom Gilbert stood by the door of the truck while Johnson photographed Davis and sent the picture to a sheriff’s dispatcher, who confirmed the man in the deputy’s photo was the same man as a booking photo of Lonnie Davis, Young said.

Davis was arrested on his outstanding warrants as well as a new charge of giving false identification.

While searching Davis, an official found a cellophane gum wrapper in the watch pocket of his pants that contained half of a white pill. Although Davis said it was an aspirin, a preliminary test of the pill by Narcotics Investigator Jamie King indicated it was Subutex, a controlled substance used to help prevent withdrawal symptoms in someone who has stopped taking narcotics. Therefore, an additional charge of possession of a controlled substance was added.

Young said the other charge was for violating probation on a previous charge of possession of a controlled substance. He was serving probation through the Limestone County Community Corrections Program and under the rules of probation, he was not to be arrested for another crime.
