Preliminary hearings for three people charged with capital murder and robbery in the July 25 shooting death of Limestone County man have been rescheduled for Aug. 15.

The hearings for Terry Dale Amerson, Kandes Elizabeth Lambert and Marty Stafford, all of Athens, are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. before Limestone District Judge Matthew Huggins. The judge will determine at the hearing whether there is adequate evidence for the defendants to stand trial.

The preliminary hearings had been set for Tuesday but were rescheduled.

The accused are charged with capital murder and robbery in the fatal shooting of Brenton Gatlin, 27. Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said the suspects were in the process of stealing cash from Gatlin when he was shot in the head at the home of Lambert, who lives at 712 Horton St. The chief said drugs, money and a relationship may have prompted the shooting, which was reported about 10 p.m. Gatlin died later at Athens-Limestone Hospital.

The suspects have remained in the Limestone County Jail since Huggins denied requests to set bail. Under state law, a judge can deny bail to defendants accused of capital murder, or murder in the commission of certain other felonies (in this case robbery).
