The Athens Police Department is conducting a murder investigation after a late Tuesday shooting incident.

Chief Floyd Johnson said it happened shortly before 10 p.m. at a residence in the 700 block of Horton Street. Officers and paramedics arrived to find Brenton C. Gatlin, 27, who had been shot once.

Johnson said Gatlin was transported to Athens-Limestone Hospital, where he later died.

Investigators worked through the night interviewing potential witnesses.

“At the present time we’re looking for several people to interview about this case and we do have a person of interest we’re looking for,” Johnson said.

He asked anyone with information about the case to contact the police department at 256-233-8700.
