HEAT SETS IN: TVA predicts near-record demand this week

- Hailey Sheperd, front, Jessica Terry, center, and Isabella Lamb cool down Wednesday at the Athens Municipal Pool. Today's high is expected to be in the mid-to-upper 90s today with a heat index near 103 degrees.
If you have an air conditioner in your home and car, odds are good it’s working overtime this week.
A high of 98 degrees was recorded shortly after 2:30 p.m. Wednesday by the National Weather Service in Huntsville. It was few degrees off from the record of 104 set in 1913.
Today’s high is expected to soar to near 95 degrees, with a heat index of 103. Don’t expect much relief the rest of the week as highs continue to hover in the low-to-mid-90s. Even worse, the next significant chance of rain is Sunday.
Prolonged heat means more air conditioner units running for prolonged periods. The Tennessee Valley Authority announced Wednesday it expected to see a peak electricity demand today and Friday of 30,000 megawatts.
If the utility’s load prediction holds true, it could be the highest demand since the summer of 2012. The peak that year was 31,000 megawatts.
“While we expect to be about 18 percent above the summer average electrical load this week, there’s plenty of power to keep us cool,” said Patrick Walshe, TVA manager of Resource Operations and Analysis.
TVA also wanted to remind customers energy use is usually highest between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. — between the warmest part of the day and when people arrive home from work.
“Reducing energy consumption between those hours will help TVA generate electricity at the lowest possible price and pass the savings on to you through lower fuel costs,” said a release from the utility.
