Authorities have yet to release the names of the victims — reportedly a homeowner and an assailant — killed Monday evening and a third occupant who survived.
According to a report in The Cullman Times, Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry said the individual who shot and killed the homeowner was killed by another occupant at the residence, but he did not specify how the assailant died.
Gentry says both the homeowner and assailant’s names are not being released as the investigation is active and ongoing. He says the shooting occurred after 5 p.m. on County Road 1301.
“We are going to be limited on details because it is an active, ongoing investigation,” Gentry said. “What I can confirm is that, this afternoon, at approximately a little after 5 p.m., we had a homeowner who was shot and killed at a residence located in Cullman County.
“The individual who shot and killed that [assailant] individual was also killed by another occupant at the residence, and at this time my heart and my prayers go out to the family. And that’s all we’re going to release right now.”
The sheriff’s office characterized the homicide as an isolated incident and said there should be no ongoing threat to residents in the vicinity of the crime scene.
The sheriff’s office also indicated it would offer no further official comment on the incident until Tuesday at the earliest.
Cullman County Coroner Jeremy Kilpatrick and District Attorney Wilson Blaylock declined to comment pending investigation.
