A woman has died following a wreck today at the intersection of U.S. 72 and Lucas Ferry, Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said.

The victim’s name has not yet been released pending notification of relatives.

The wreck occurred at 8:07 a.m. when a tractor-trailer rig collided with a Jeep. 

One victim was flown by MedFlight helicopter to Huntsville Hospital and the other was taken to Athens-Limestone Hospital.

Eastbound traffic on 72 was blocked for more than three hours following the accident.
