Calhoun tuition for summer classes is $117 per class hour for in-state students and $234 per class hour for out-of-state students. Fees total $31 for both in-state and out-of-state students, and there’s an access/wellness fee of $10, making a total of $158 per class hour for in-state students and $275 for out-of-state.

Calhoun’s tuition rates are along the same lines of other community colleges such as Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, Northwest-Shoals Community College in Muscle Shoals and Phil Campbell and J. F. Drake State Community and Technical College in Huntsville.

Though Wallace State doesn’t specify in-state or out-of-state tuition or whether the rate is for summer or regular session, their website lists tuition as $119 per credit hour with $29 in fees. Northwest Shoals Community College summer in-state and out-of-state tuition is the same as Calhoun, but the fees are slightly different — $14 less. Drake State doesn’t specify whether the rate on its website is for summer or regular session, but tuition rates begin at $119 per credit hour and $28 in fees for in-state tuition. Out-of-state tuition is twice that — $238 plus fees — but students who reside in Tennessee counties that border Madison County are charged in-state costs.

Each college lists distance learning classes as the same rate as on-campus classes.

Distance Education, or online courses, has seen the most significant increase with more than 11 percent over the last year. Students taking summer classes at Calhoun during the summer while away from their main colleges or universities have increased the transient student population more than seven percent this year, reports said.

President Dr. Jim Klauber said even though the summer increase may seem slight, the college is pleased to see its numbers go up.

“Based on feedback from students, we made a few changes in scheduling options this summer, which we feel definitely paid off,” he said in an announcement. “We offered a number of delayed-start classes to accommodate the schedules of our recent high school graduates and transient students and developed a targeted advertising campaign to reach these populations. We feel that based on our numbers this summer, these efforts have been successful in helping us to realize the increase we have experienced.”

Registration for the Fall 2017 semester is ongoing through Aug. 20. Classes begin Aug. 21.
