HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama man faces up to 20 years in prison after being convicted of manslaughter in the beating death of his 3-year-old son.

AL.com reports 37-year-old Maurice Cartwright of Huntsville was found guilty Friday after a five-day trial.

Prosecutors were seeking a capital murder conviction in the 2013 death of Jeremyah Shoulders. If found guilty of that charge, Cartwright would have faced a possible death sentence or life in prison.

The manslaughter verdict means he will face up to 20 when he is sentenced Aug. 3.

Jeremyah Shoulders died May 2, 2013, after being treated for two days at Huntsville Hospital. Prosecutors said the child had been choked and beaten.
