An Athens man accused of running from a police officer during a traffic stop has been charged with drug possession, attempting to elude and another charge, an official said Monday.

Athens Police Officer Bobby Hand stopped a vehicle Friday after seeing the driver throw a prescription pill bottle out the window, Capt. Trevor Harris said in a press release.

The driver — Jason Clay Mace, 25, of 14135 Elk River Mills Road — then abandoned the Chevrolet Cavalier he was driving and ran through a nearby yard in an attempt to escape the traffic stop, Harris said.

Hand stayed with the Cavalier and detained Mace’s passenger, Terry Amerson. Mace ran through the front door of a residence, then climbed out one of the back windows of the home, Harris said.

Detective Joe McClanahan and Officer Joe Kimery were able to capture Mace without incident moments later.

The pill bottle, which Hand recovered, contained a small quantity of methamphetamine and three pills (all controlled substances). Drug paraphernalia was also found in the car, Harris said.

Mace was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, fleeing/attempting to elude law enforcement and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

A Limestone County sheriff’s deputy arrested Amerson, who was wanted on warrants in Limestone County.

Mace was book at the Athens Police Department and transferred to the Limestone County Jail. No bail had been set on the new charges, though bail had been set at $1,500 on three failure to appear charges.
