Local golfers compete in tournaments

Michaela Williams of Athens had a third-place showing in the 85th Alabama Women’s State Amateur Championship of the Alabama Golf Association.

Elaine Wood of Spanish Fort holed a 6-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to defeat Williams (+1) to win her second straight Alabama amateur championship title and third in last four years.

The event was hosted Friday by the Montgomery Country Club in Montgomery. The tournament is open to any female amateur golfer who is a legal resident of Alabama is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Alabama Golf Association and has an active GHIN USGA Handicap Index at an AGA member club.

Williams’ sister, Ally Williams (+4), was one of nine players who tied for fifth. Heather Gillenwaters of Madison (+15) finished 30th in the field of 34.

Michaela Williams, who graduated from Athens High School last year, is now a member of the University of Tennessee’s golf team.

Championship in Huntsville this week

Happening this week at Valley Hill Country Club in Huntsville is the 54th Alabama Girls State Junior Championship. Last year, Michaela Williams posted a 14-under 202 total to edge Michaela Morard (Huntsville) by one shot at Bent Brook Golf Club in Bessemer.

Michaela Morard (-4) of Huntsville was the overall winner Tuesday in the 14-18 age bracket. Ally Williams (+2) was third in the field of 29. Rosie Wiethop (+23) of Madison was 26th.

Round 3 of the tournament was scheduled to kick off at 7:30 a.m. today.
