OPELIKA (AP) — Human skeletal remains that were found in a remote wooded area of Alabama have been identified.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office tells local media that the remains were identified as belonging to 35-year-old Jeffrey Michael Sharritt, a Phenix City man who was last seen in July 2014.

Sheriff Jay Jones says the remains were found on Sept. 20, 2015 in a wooded area near Salem. Authorities don’t know how long the remains had been there.

The remains were sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for initial analysis before being forwarded to the FBI laboratory in Quantico, Virginia, for additional testing. Examinations by the FBI revealed Sharritt as the victim.

Jones says Sharritt’s death is being ruled a homicide. His cause of death hasn’t been released.
