Anna Smallwood is selling cookies and lemonade Monday to help the homeless in Limestone, Madison and Morgan counties.

A 10-year-old Athens girl plans to give half the proceeds from her upcoming cookies and lemonade sale to help the homeless.

Anna Smallwood — the daughter of Stan and Rachel Smallwood, who own Twilight Medical Clinic — will be selling two cookies and a glass of lemonade for only $1 on Monday.

She will set up shop on the porch of her parents’ medical office at 910 W. Hobbs St. in Athens, the little yellow house across from Athens-Limestone Hospital’s emergency room.

She will donate half the proceeds from the event to Hearts for Homeless, a nonprofit group that collects food, clothing, bedding, tarps and personal hygiene items to homeless people in Limestone, Madison and Morgan counties.

“I have nicknamed Anna our little princess,” said Angie McElyea, one of the founders of the group.

“She has already made rubberband bracelets, sold them and donated $60 to Hearts for Homeless, which means she sold 120 bracelets,” McElyea said.

Anna, who will attend Athens Intermediate School in the fall, decided to help those in need after seeing her parents help.

“We have a patient who has been helping the homeless, and we have donated from the clinic,” Stan said. “Anna wanted to raise her own money to help.”

Volunteers with Hearts for Homeless collect and distribute items to the area’s homeless under the slogan, “The forgotten shall be forgotten no more.”

Once a month, the volunteers help launder clothing, sleeping bags and blankets for the homeless.

Those who wish to donate to the group can bring water, nonperishable food, clothing, bedding, personal hygiene items, medical supplies, sunscreen and other items to The News Courier office at 410 W. Green St. in Athens, across from the Farmers Market.
