Athens Police arrested a Birmingham woman Tuesday in connection with a theft case dating back to March, an official said.

Capt. Trevor Harris said a local woman was approached March 15 by the suspect in a shopping center parking lot. The suspect, identified as 59 year-old Rosolyn Saffold Williams, told the woman she had found a purse full of money and offered to split it with the victim.

Harris said Williams allegedly convinced the victim to withdraw money from her bank account as collateral then gave the victim false contact information.

Detective Kelly Fussell submitted the information about the scheme to Crime Stoppers and caught a break when a viewer recognized the suspect as Williams. Fussell and Sgt. Brett Constable drove to Birmingham Tuesday to pick up Williams, who was brought back to the Athens Police Department.

After she was questioned about the case, Harris said Williams was charged with one count of first-degree theft. After being booked, she was placed in the Limestone County Jail. Her bond was set at $5,000.
