SCOTTSBORO, Ala. (AP) — Fire officials say a husband and wife died in a houseboat fire in northern Alabama.
WAFF-TV reports the fire started Monday at the couple’s houseboat at the Goose Pond Marina in Scottsboro. The couple — 79-year-old John Phillips Bruce and 69-year-old Emily Nelson Bruce — and their golden retriever died in the blaze. The houseboat was the couple’s primary residence.
The Scottsboro Fire Department Chief Gene Necklaus says the fire was contained inside the boat and firefighters fought the blaze from the dock.
The 911 call came from a neighboring boater, who smelled smoke.
