A 2nd and Charles is set to open in Madison in July, officials said Friday. The media reseller operates two other Alabama locations in Hoover and Dothan.

A third Alabama location of media reseller 2nd and Charles is under construction in Madison and could be open by late July, a spokesperson said Friday.

The store will be located at 8050 U.S. 72 West near the intersection of Wall Triana Highway.

A division of Birmingham-based Books-A-Million, 2nd and Charles operates two others stores in Dothan and Hoover. It operates in 15 other states nationally, with the closest being Georgia and Florida.

2nd and Charles buys and sells a wide variety of media, including books, vinyl records, CDs, DVDs, video games, comic books, collectibles and electronics like iPads.

Melanie Smith, senior director of marketing for Books-A-Million, said Madison was an attractive location because the store “becomes an arm of the community” where it operates.

“Madison has a focus on its schools, people and growth,” she said. “We want to be the destination for books, vinyl, comics, fandom and collectibles, and we can’t wait to meet the people of Madison.”

She explained each store is different and reflects the community. Because 2nd and Charles is a buy, sell and trade company, Smith said, the products also reflect “the people who become very loyal customers.”

“Our store will be an experience and an exercise is discovering treasures that are different every day,” she said.

Unique features of the store include a gaming area called The Arena. It is a designated seating area with two large flat-screen televisions, gaming consoles and accessories to play while in the store shopping.

The stores frequently host a variety of events, including prize pack giveaways and themed events like Star Wars Day, Harry Potter’s birthday celebration, movie release parties, Pokemon tournaments and cosplay events.

“2nd and Charles customers, from kids to their parents, are known to spend leisure time in the stores,” Smith said.

About 25-30 associates will be hired for the 23,000-square-foot Madison location. Positions to be filled include a general manager, part-time associate and buyers for used merchandise.
