Singing on Square – heavy-metal style

Singing on the Square starts at 6 p.m. Friday, May 19, at the Vietnam Veterans of America at 17915 W. Elm St. in Athens. Join Athens-Limestone County Tourism and sponsor Jimmy Smith Buick GMC for a free concert with heavy-metal bands Contagan and Temple of Blood at 7 p.m. The bands will play 1980s tunes. Bring lawn chairs, and ear plugs, if desired. Next month’s band will be Trippin Dixie on June 16.

Free workshop

The Limestone County Master Gardeners Association will present a free workshop on building a potting table at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 20, at the Athens Lowe’s garden center. Attendees will receive instructions on tools and parts required for construction. More information: 256-614-3530.

Camp Hope — volunteers needed

Anyone ages 16 and older interested in volunteering at Camp Hope is invited to training 2 p.m. Sunday, May 21, at the Hospice Office on Marion Street in Athens.

TUESDAY

Free seminar

The Alabama Cooperative Extension System will present a free seminar, “Drought and Your Yard,” from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, May 23, at the Extension office at 1109 W. Market St., Athens. Subject matter to include the affects of drought on a yard, native plants for landscapes, irrigation and more.

Used book sale

The friends of Athens-Limestone Public Library will hold a used book sale from 10:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, at the library.

DECORATION DAYS

Gatlin Cemetery

Gatlin Cemetery on Stateline Road will decorate Monday and Tuesday, May 21-22. Those unable to attend are asked to make donations at People’s State Bank of Commerce on Main Street in Ardmore.

Sylone Cemetery

Decoration at Sylone Cemetery will be Sunday, May 21. Donations for upkeep are appreciated. More information: 256-732-3994.

Jackson Cemetery

Decoration at Jackson Cemetery near Minor Hill, Tennessee will be Saturday, June 3. If unable to attend, send donations for upkeep to Brad Alsup, 686 Alsup Hollow Road, Minor Hill, TN 38473.

Reunion Cemetery

Decoration and a goat stew fundraiser will be Saturday, June 3, at Reunion Cemetery on Reunion Road in Athens. Attendees are asked to bring their own container. Donations to the cemetery fund should be sent to Nicole Collins, 25172 Alabama 127, Elkmont, AL 35260.

Camp Hope

Any child ages 5-15 who has experienced a loss is invited to attend Camp Hope, Tuesday, June 6, at Camp Helen. Pre-registration is required. Register online www.hospiceolc.org or for more information, call Emily Sandlin, 256-777-2807.

Memorial Day program

Maj. Gen. James Simpson will be guest speaker at the Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives’ annual Memorial Day program at 11 a.m. Monday, May 29, at the Limestone County Event Center. Free event. Public invited.

American Legion fundraiser

American Legion Post 49 fundraiser sponsored by Krystal is from 4-9 p.m. May 30-31. To participate, pick up a flyer at American Legion Post 49, 124 Cloverleaf Drive in Athens, before ordering at Krystal’s. The restaurant is giving 50 percent of all proceeds from flyer redemption to the post’s youth activities.

Boogie Shoes Bash

Habitat for Humanity of Athens-Limestone County will host a Boogie Shoes Bash from 6-10 p.m. Saturday, June 3, at the Revival Center, 303 W. Washington St., Athens. Dance to live music by Trippin’ Dixie. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. $5 for children under 10. Proceeds benefit Habitat for Humanity. Houston library book sale

The Houston Memorial Library, 101 N. Houston St. is having a book sale from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, June 3. Books are priced to sell, with $1 hardback books, 10 paperback books for $1 or 12 hardback books for $10. All of the proceeds collected will go directly to repairing and renovating the Houston Memorial Library and Museum.

Project Sweet Peas Jamboree

Project Sweet Peas, a national nonprofit organization, will host a jamboree and silent auction from 4-8 p.m. Saturday, June 10, at Ardmore Town Park. Events include games, inflatables, a train ride, the Big Green Bus and more than 40 local vendors. Proceeds will benefit Project Sweet Peas, which provides care packages and services to families who have a child in a neonatal intensive care unit or families who have experienced infant loss. Special Needs Rodeo

The Limestone County Sheriff’s Special Needs Rodeo is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, May 19, at the Limestone Sheriff’s Rodeo Arena on Alabama 99. Registration for 2017 has closed. Volunteers must check in at the red tent for assignments. More information: 256-232-0111.

Sheriff’s Rodeo

The 35th annual Limestone County Sheriff’s Rodeo is Friday, May 19, and Saturday, May 20, at the Sheriff’s Rodeo Arena on Alabama 99. Gates open at 6 p.m. both nights and events start at 8. Adult tickets are $15 and tickets for children 12 and under are $10. Tickets are now on sale at the Sheriff’s Office at 101 W. Rodeo Queen Luncheon

Curry’s of Decatur will cater the food for this year’s Rodeo Queen Luncheon, which will be at noon Saturday, May 20, at the Limestone County Event Center at 114 W. Pryor St. in Athens. Tickets, which are $25, must be purchased in advance. More information: Jennifer McBay 256-232-0111.
