The Johnson Elementary second-grader who was hit by a car nearly a month ago is now in her own room at Children’s of Alabama hospital in Birmingham.

Ashleigh Jones, 8, is out of intensive care and out of the medically induced coma doctors put her in and took her out of over the last four weeks.

Johnson Principal Brad Lewis said a teacher visited Jones and her family over the weekend. He said Jones recognized the teacher and tried to say her name.

“I’m not sure if she can speak where it’s audible, but she’s able to mouth words,” he said. “She has come a long way but she still has more to go.”

Jones was hit by a car April 18 while crossing Copeland Road.

Reports say she and her brother had just gotten off the school bus when she crossed the road to check the family’s mailbox and was on her way back when the car struck her.

During the last month, doctors kept Jones sedated while her body worked to recover.

Community members helped raise donations for the Jones family by participating in Hat Day at local schools and to a medical fund and a GoFundMe account. The last known amount collected from Hat Day and other deposits into the medical fund was close to $30,000, Lewis said.

The Ashleigh Jones Medical Fund is still accepting donations at any Redstone Federal Credit Union branch.
