Friends of Athens-Limestone Public Library in Athens will hold a used book sale from 10:15 a.m.-2:15 p.m. today at the library at 603 S. Jefferson St. in Athens.

American Legion stew

American Legion Post 49 will host its monthly chicken stew from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. today at 124 Cloverleaf Drive, Athens. The cost is $5 per quart with one dessert for dine-in or carry out. Call 256-230-6233 for delivery or reserve carry-outs. Delivery is free to offices or job sites within the city limits of Athens.

Singing on Square – heavy-metal style

Singing on the Square starts at 6 p.m. Friday, May 19, on the Limestone County Courthouse Square in Athens. Join Athens-Limestone County Tourism and sponsor Jimmy Smith Buick GMC for a free concert with heavy-metal bands Contagan and Temple of Blood at 7 p.m. The bands will play 1980s tunes. Bring lawn chairs, and ear plugs, if desired. Rain location is Vietnam Veterans building at 17915 W. Elm St. in Athens. Next month’s band will be Trippin Dixie on June 16.

Free workshop

The Limestone County Master Gardeners Association will present a free workshop on building a potting table at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 20, at the Athens Lowe’s garden center. Attendees will receive instructions on tools and parts required for construction. More information: 256-614-3530.

Memorial Day program

Maj. Gen. James Simpson will be guest speaker at the Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives’ annual Memorial Day program at 11 a.m. Monday, May 29, at the Limestone County Event Center. Free event. Public invited.

Camp Hope — volunteers needed

Anyone ages 16 and older interested in volunteering at Camp Hope is invited to training 2 p.m. Sunday, May 21, at the Hospice Office on Marion Street in Athens.

Gatlin Cemetery

Gatlin Cemetery on Stateline Road will decorate Monday and Tuesday, May 21-22. Those unable to attend are asked to make donations at People’s State Bank of Commerce on Main Street in Ardmore.

Sylone Cemetery

Decoration at Sylone Cemetery will be Sunday, May 21. Donations for upkeep are appreciated. More information: 256-732-3994.

Boogie Shoes Bash

Habitat for Humanity of Athens-Limestone County will host a Boogie Shoes Bash from 6-10 p.m. Saturday, June 3, at the Revival Center, 303 W. Washington St., Athens. Dance to live music by Trippin’ Dixie. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. $5 for children under 10. Proceeds benefit Habitat for Humanity. Rodeo street dance and fashion show

The Limestone County Sheriff’s Rodeo street dance and fashion show will be 6 p.m. today on the east side of the Limestone County Courthouse. Live music provided by Jeff Whitlow Country. Fashion show begins at 7. Admission is free. More information: 256-232-0111.

Rodeo slack competition

The Limestone County Sheriff’s Rodeo will host the slack competition at 9 a.m. Thursday, May 18, at the Limestone Sheriff’s Arena on Alabama 99. Gates open at 8 a.m.; admission is $5. More information: 256-232-0111.

Special Needs Rodeo

The Limestone County Sheriff’s Special Needs Rodeo is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, May 19, at the Limestone Sheriff’s Rodeo Arena on Alabama 99. Registration for 2017 has closed. Volunteers must check in at the red tent for assignments. More information: 256-232-0111.

Sheriff’s Rodeo

The 35th annual Limestone County Sheriff’s Rodeo is Friday, May 19, and Saturday, May 20, at the Sheriff’s Rodeo Arena on Alabama 99. Gates open at 6 p.m. both nights and events start at 8. Adult tickets are $15 and tickets for children 12 and under are $10. Tickets are now on sale at the Sheriff’s Office at 101 W. Rodeo Queen Luncheon

• GOP. Limestone County Republican Executive Committee will meet tonight, Tuesday, May 16, at Valley Event Center at 22335 U.S. 72 in Athens. Social begins at 6 p.m., meeting at 7.

• Democrats. The Limestone County Democrat Club will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 18, at the headquarters at 22143 U.S. 72 East. Everyone is welcome.

• SCV. The Capt. Thomas H. Hobbs Camp 768 will meet 6 p.m. Thursday, May 18, at the Alabama Veterans Museum. Nabe Harris, Richard Martin and Wes Parker will speak on Fort Henderson and Trinity School. The public is invited.

• Positive Look. Positive Look, a support group for the blind and visually impaired, will meet from 10 a.m.-noon Friday, May 19, at the Athens Recreation Center. Bring finger foods to share.
