NAACP Reading program
The Limestone County NAACP is offering a free motivational reading program for students ages 3-13 at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Round Island Creek Mission Center, 13829 Lucas Ferry Road, Athens. The program — Students Taking Excellence Personally = Success, or STEPS — motivates students who may not enjoy reading. Marker dedication
The Society of the War of 1812 in the State of Alabama invites the community to a dedication of a marker for Capt. William Legg at 1 p.m. Saturday at Legg Cemetery on Leggtown Road in Elkmont.

Friends of Athens-Limestone Public Library in Athens will hold a used book sale from 10:15 a.m.-2:15 p.m. Tuesday, May 16.

Fielding Cemetery
Cleaning and decoration for Fielding Cemetery will be 9 a.m. Saturday, May 13. Come and bring donations, which are badly needed for upkeep of the cemetery. If you are unable to attend, please send donations to Mae Todd, 19817 Yarbrough Road, Athens, AL 35613
Wesley Chapel cleanup
Wesley Chapel Cemetery at 19430 Sharp Road in Athens will hold its annual cleanup day at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 13, in time for Mother’s Day. Bring mowers, rakes, string trimmers and trash bags. All old flowers will be removed. Take all trash away from site. Also, donations are needed for the upkeep of the cemetery. Those who cannot afford to donate are asked to mow the cemetery once. Limestone Cemetery
Limestone Cemetery cleanup will be 8 a.m. Saturday, May 13, at the cemetery off U.S. 72 West, 3 miles on right from Athens. The cemetery will be cleaned to prepare for mowing and the church building will be cleaned. Bring rakes, mowers and brooms. Karaoke fundraiser
American Veterans Mims-Russell Post 21, at 22769 Black Road in Athens, has karaoke night from 8 p.m.-midnight every Friday. There is a $5 cover charge at the door. Singing on Square – heavy metal style
Singing on the Square starts at 6 p.m. Friday, May 19, on the Limestone County Courthouse Square in Athens. Join Athens-Limestone County Tourism and sponsor Jimmy Smith Buick GMC for a free concert with heavy metal bands Contagan and Temple of Blood at 7 p.m. The bands will play 1980s tunes. Bring lawn chairs, and ear plugs, if desired. Rain location is Vietnam Veterans building at 17915 W. Elm St. in Athens. Next month’s band will be Trippin Dixie on June 16.
American Legion stew
American Legion Post 49 will host its monthly chicken stew from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, at 124 Cloverleaf Drive, Athens. The cost is $5 per quart with one dessert for dine-in or carry out. Beans and rice giveaway
St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church at 207 E. Washington St. in Athens will give away 2 pounds of pinto beans and 3 pounds of rice from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, May 20, while supplies last. No questions asked.
Memorial Day program
Maj. Gen. James Simpson will be the guest speaker at the Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives’ annual Memorial Day program at 11 a.m. Monday, May 29, at the Limestone County Event Center. The event is free and the community is invited.
RODEO WEEK EVENTS
Sheriff’s Rodeo Parade
The Limestone Sheriff’s Rodeo Parade will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Athens. Lineup starts at 10 a.m. The parade will travel from the arena on Alabama 99 into Athens on Market Street to the Limestone County Courthouse Square, left on Jefferson Street to Elm Street, then back to the arena. Kids day
Preston’s Western Wear will host a Limestone County Sheriff’s Rodeo Kids Day at 5 p.m. Monday, May 15, at its store on U.S. 72 in Athens. Events will include horseback rides and other events. Admission is free. More information: 256-232-0111.
Rodeo street dance and fashion show
The Limestone County Sheriff’s Rodeo street dance and fashion show will be 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, on the east side of the Limestone County Courthouse. Live music provided by Jeff Whitlow Country. Fashion show begins at 7. Admission is free. More information: 256-232-0111.

Sheriff’s Rodeo
The 35th annual Limestone County Sheriff’s Rodeo is Friday, May 19, and Saturday, May 20, at the Sheriff’s Rodeo Arena on Alabama 99. Gates open at 6 p.m. both nights and events start at 8. Adult tickets are $15 and tickets for children 12 and under are $10. Tickets are now on sale at the Sheriff’s Office at 101 W.
